Picking a retirement age

When making financial arrangements for your retirement it is crucial to know what age you are looking at retiring. Not everyone will retire at the same age so making that decision should be a carefully thought out process. Your retirement age can be effected by many factors including money, health and whether you can retire from your job. Some jobs such as the armed forces and the police force will have a set retirement age. This will be the day that you stop work and your pension will kick in.

The state pension age and the time you decide to retire can be entirely different ages. If you have enough money to retire most people will do so before they reach state pension age. Having a set age in mind will make you work that little bit harder to try and retire on time. If you do not save as much as you thought you would have then you could be forced to work past your retirement age. Saving a little extra each month to go towards any pension you may have. Retiring from your career does not mean you have to give up working completely. It is often the case that when people have a early retirement age from a job such as the police force they will take a job somewhere else. This can help build more savings and keep you occupied. When you have early retirement you would often get bored or lonely so taking a job even if it was part time would keep you busy and some money coming in. Just because you hit retirement age does not mean you automatically have to give up work. Your retirement age is purely personal so if you want to keep working then you can. There can be some age limits in certain work areas due to health and saftey aspects of the job.
